If you like a thicker smoothie or are using fresh instead of frozen banana, add ice for better texture. For a thinner consistency, add more water. For a sweeter smoothie, add 2 teaspoons of pure maple syrup or 1-2 pitted Medjool dates.

simple ways to customize this recipe:

Make the smoothie thicker using only 3/4 cup water & use as many frozen ingredients (like bananas & spinach).  Once blended, pour into a bowl and add your choice of smoothie bowl toppings - nuts, seeds, fresh fruit, granola, honey, cacao nibs or a drizzle of almond butter.

If you don’t have chia seeds, you can use flax seeds instead or you can skip them altogether. In place of baby spinach, you could use baby kale. I used a Granny Smith apple for this recipe but you could use a sweeter apple like Honeycrisp, Gala or Fuji if you prefer.
